The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), in conjunction with FTSE Russell, has announced the latest quarterly index review changes across the FTSE/JSE Index Series. These structural adjustments, driven by shifts in market capitalization, liquidity profiles, and investability screening, will force passive index trackers and institutional portfolio managers to realign their holdings across blue-chip, mid-cap, and sector-specific benchmarks.
Top 40 & All Share Index Component Shifts
The flagship FTSE/JSE Top 40 Index (J200; J2EQ; J300) sees a notable blue-chip modification, with pharmaceutical giant Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd (APN) gaining entry into the premier index. Conversely, retail group Woolworths Holdings Ltd (WHL) has been excluded following changes in relative market capitalization rankings.
Across the broader FTSE/JSE All Share Index (J203; J303), four counters have been added to the constituent list:
- Additions: Canal Plus SA (CNP), Greencoat Renewables plc (GCT), Stadio Holdings Limited (SDO), and Brait plc (BAT).
- Exclusions: Primary Health Properties PLC (PHP) and RCL Foods Limited (RCL).
Mid Cap, Small Cap, and Sectoral Benchmark Rebalancing
Movement within market-cap tiers reflects shifting liquidity dynamics across the bourses. On the FTSE/JSE Mid Cap Index (J201), Canal Plus SA (CNP) makes its entry, while Primary Health Properties PLC (PHP) and The Foschini Group Limited (TFG) are excluded. The Foschini Group subsequently migrates into the FTSE/JSE Small Cap Index (J202), joined by additions Greencoat Renewables plc (GCT), Stadio Holdings Limited (SDO), and Brait plc (BAT), while RCL Foods Limited (RCL) is removed.
Sector-specific indices also undergo key composition updates:
- FTSE/JSE Industrial 25 (J211; J311; J5EQ): Tech provider Datatec Ltd (DTC) replaces healthcare retailer Dis-Chem Pharmacies Ltd (DCP).
- FTSE/JSE Financial & Industrial 30 (J213): Momentum Group Limited (MTM) is added, replacing Woolworths Holdings Ltd (WHL).
- FTSE/JSE Dividend+ (J259): Mining counters Northam Platinum Holdings Ltd (NPH) and Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd (IMP) are added, while The Foschini Group (TFG) and Mondi plc (MNP) are excluded.
Index rebalancing events typically generate heightened trading volume and execution activity around the effective date as exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and benchmark-registered funds rebalance their asset allocations.
