Global index provider FTSE Russell has officially included 31 Nigerian equities across Large, Mid, and Small Cap categories in its FTSE Frontier Index Series. Disclosed in its annual September 2026 index review, the constituent selection marks a pivotal milestone as Nigeria prepares to formally reclaim its Frontier Market status on Monday, September 21, 2026, ending a three-year classification as an "Unclassified" market.
Ten Newly Eligible Large-Cap Heavyweights
Ten prominent Nigerian blue-chip stocks have been designated as "Newly Eligible" in the index provider's Large Cap tier. This selection features leading megacap equities and institutional banking counters:
- Financials & Telecoms: First HoldCo, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), Zenith Bank, Stanbic IBTC Holdings, and MTN Nigeria Communications.
- Industrial, Energy & Agriculture: Dangote Cement, Aradel Holdings, Nestlé Nigeria, Nigerian Breweries, and Presco Plc.
Mid-Cap and Small-Cap Constituent Breakdown
Beside the ten large-cap counters, FTSE Russell classified 21 additional Nigerian companies across mid-cap and small-cap segments, broadening the investment universe for international fund managers tracking frontier benchmarks:
- Mid Cap (10 Stocks): Access Holdings, Dangote Sugar Refinery, FCMB Group, Fidelity Bank, Guinness Nigeria, Oando, Okomu Oil Palm, Unilever Nigeria, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and Wema Bank.
- Small Cap (11 Stocks): Custodian Investment, Fidson Healthcare, Julius Berger, National Salt Company of Nigeria (NASCON), NAHCO, NGX Group, Sterling Financial Holdings, Transnational Corporation (Transcorp), UAC Nigeria, United Capital, and Vitafoam Nigeria.
Reclassification Backstory and Capital Inflow Outlook
Nigeria was downgraded to Unclassified status in September 2023 due to acute foreign exchange illiquidity and capital repatriation backlogs. However, sustained foreign exchange market reforms, cleared backlogs, and the smooth transition to a modernized T+1 settlement cycle paved the way for FTSE Russell's formal confirmation on August 27, 2026. Financial analysts anticipate that the inclusion of these 31 equities will spur renewed foreign portfolio inflows, deepen trading liquidity, and drive price discovery across the Nigerian Exchange.
